How is research performance actually assessed, and why does this matter so much for our career paths? What lies behind current reform debates around concepts such as “narrative CVs,” “open science,” or “responsible metrics”? And, most importantly, which changes would genuinely be helpful for you?

We would like to discuss these questions together with you in an open, critical, and practice-oriented way. Many reforms in research assessment are currently being prepared worldwide, and their implementation will most strongly affect those at the beginning of their academic careers. This is precisely why your perspectives, needs, and expectations should be at the centre of the discussion. While the topic is not yet as prominent in Germany as in some other countries, it will continue to gain importance over the coming years and will increasingly influence decisions on project funding at both national and European levels.

Outstanding publications alone are often no longer sufficient to fully represent research performance. Preparing for this shift - already at early career stages - is therefore essential.

JGU Gutenberg Academy together with FORTHEM organizes an exchange with two focus groups:

1) doctoral researchers, postdoctoral researchers, junior group leaders, and junior professors (Focus group 1)
2) top level administration (e.g. deans and heads of unit), experienced researchers, research managers and support staff (Focus group 2)

You would like to get involved in the discussion? Then join, depending on your status, one of the group discussions

Focus group 1 Early Career Researchers, 04.02.2026 at 13:00 - 15:00
